WELCOME MESSAGE FROM SASPEN PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the SASPEN (South African Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition) Council, we are delighted to be hosting the SASPEN 2011 Congress in the magnificent purple setting of Pretoria. The 2011 Congress with the theme “The total is greater than the sum of the parts” will build on the successes of the previous Congress and will address relevant clinical research and its translation into evidence-based practice for clinical nutrition practitioners. The 2011 Congress also reveals SASPEN's future aims in addressing the needs of different categories of nutrition practitioners, in this instance Nurses, an indispensible resource in the correct practice of nutrition. The 2011 Congress covers various topics in the form of plenaries, symposia and workshops which include topical, some of which are less prominently debated, and novel emerging themes, such as obstructive sleep apnoea, pre-, pro- and syn-biotics, neurological disorders, GIT disorders in critical illness, pharmaconutrition, paediatric oncology and neonatology and wound healing. SASPEN Council recognizes the expectations the new developments/concepts, as well as those of other known but relatively under-attended/reported aspects of practice, exact on nutrition practitioners in the country. The Council, therefore, chose the Congress theme to highlight the wider prevailing practice needs for timely, safe and cost-effective nutritional practices, which aim to afford the opportunity to our members and other delegates to interact and exchange their clinical experiences. For this purpose, an excellent international and national faculty has been invited to the Congress to share, guide, challenge, debate and participate in shaping and/or consolidating current nutritional practices in the defined topics in adult and paediatric nutrition in the country.
The SASPEN 2011 Congress would not have been possible without the generous, continued, professional and financial support of the industry which enabled us to create the Congress’ supportive, interactive and learning environment.
On behalf of the SASPEN Council and the Congress Organizing Committee, I welcome you to SASPEN 2011, thank you for your support, and look forward to your contributions in making the Congress the success we are sure it will be.
Prof Demetre Labadarios
